Bergen desde el Norte

No tengo ni idea sobre si Hudson recaló en Bergen o no. Posiblemete tenía mucha prisa por llegar a China, y se fué directamente hacia el Cabo Norte. Por lo menos, Juet no lo cuenta.

Pero supongamos que sí lo hubiese hecho. ¿Qué se habría encontrado? Como nunca he navegado en Noruega, no me queda más remedio que apoyarme en el derrotero EnRoute Norway (pdf - 10 MB).
Siento decir que MapTech no dispone de cartas náuticas detalladas de la zona en su web, por lo que lo más cómodo ha sido situar los lugares citados en el derrotero en un Google Maps.

Para empezar cito literalmente el párrafo llamado Approach to Bergen from North (pg.71).

Fedjeosen (60°44'N., 4°44'E.) is the principal N approach to Bergen. It affords direct access from sea into the channels of Indreleia, which continue S to Bergen for about 30 miles. It is about 1 mile wide between the island of Fedje and the islets to the S.

On the S side of the channel, Bolleflesi, a rock lying on foul ground which breaks, is located about 1 mile NW of Nordoyni. A racon is situated at the lighted beacon standing on the rock. A light is shown from the NW end of Nordoy.

On the N side of the channel, Ostre Hellisoy is situated close to the SW side of Fedje. A prominent light tower, 3m high, stands on the island. A racon is situated at the light tower.

In addition to the above, at night, the lights at Onglesundet (60°43'N., 4°52'E.) and Vardholmen (60°46'N., 4°52'E.) may be of aid to navigation in the channel.
Hakeskallen, a 14m patch, lies about 1 mile NW of Bolleflesi and reduces the navigable width of the channel to about 1 mile. Other dangers S and W of Hakeskallen may best be seen on the chart.

Vessels from the N proceeding to Bergen can pass through the length of Hjeltefjorden and then through the SW reach of Byfjorden, the channels of which lead W and S of Askoy. An alternative route leads from the N part of Hjeltefjorden into Herdlefjorden, through that fjord, and then through the N reach of Byfjorden. These two routes are the ones generally used.

Adolescentes en solitario

Hace una semana, oigo una conversación en el trabajo sobre una adolescente que se ha perdido en el océano Índico mientras intentaba dar la vuelta al mundo en solitario. Opiniones de lo más variopintas sobre la adolescente, y sobre sus padres. Me entero del nombre de la chica: Abby Sunderland.

En cuanto puedo, corro a buscar el número de mayo de 2010 de Voiles et Voiliers, que dedicaba un artículo a este tema: Records d'ados en solo. En efecto, allí estaba ella. Forma parte de un grupo de adolescentes que intentan, y algunos han conseguido, dar la vuelta al mundo en solitario. Ellos: Zac Sunderland, Jesse Martin, Michael Perham y David Dicks, entre otros. Ellas, Jessica Watson y Abby Sunderland, entre otras.

Es sorprendente contemplar a Abby, intentando su hazaña, y peleando con el piloto automático, que se le resistía.

O poco después de haber pasado el Cabo de Hornos de oeste a este, a la altura de una isla argentina.

Todo ello, poco antes de adentrarse en el Océano Índico, en donde le esperaba una tempestad que terminaría desarbolando su Wild Eyes. Felizmente, ha sido localizada, y recogida por un pesquero francés. Ya he localizado su blog, que tengo que ojear... con el nombre de Navegante Abby. También veré sus fotos en flickr.

Abby trataba de emular a Jessica, que ha sido la primera adolescente en dar la vuelta al mundo a vela, en solitario y sin asistencias.

Otra adolescente, con un comportamiento poco habitual, que quiere y puede embarcarse en esa aventura, pero que no le impide seguir haciendo sus deberes :-)

Adolescentes en solitario. Un mundo que se me escapa. No tengo palabras para comentar estos comportamientos. Pero seguro que vuelven de ese viaje más sabias.

Sólo me queda volver a escuchar la conferencia (11,5 MB - 1h36) de Isabelle Autissier. En ella, nos regala más de una gozosa hora comentando su pasión por la navegación en solitario.

Seeing as we're now over half way around the world, I thought it might be a good time to have a bit of a re-think about exactly what I am doing out here and whether or not my expectations have changed at all.

When I first dreamt of sailing around the world, the first thing that caught my attention, was curiosity about whether or not it was even something that was achievable. It wasn't so much the action and adrenaline parts that appealed to me, but thinking about all the details and finding ways to minimize the risks. I wanted to challenge myself and achieve something to be proud of. And yes, I wanted to inspire people. I hate that so many dreams never actually become anything more than that, a dream. I'm not saying that everyone should buy a boat and take off around the world, but I hope that by achieving my own dream, I'm showing people that it is possible to reach their own goals, whatever they might be and however big or small.

Viaje noruego de Hudson

El otro día, no sé por qué, quizás por eso de que en el verano siento más fuerte la llamada del Atlántico Norte, me encontré releyendo el relato del tercer viaje del explorador Hudson. Me sorprendió la soltura del cronista Juet al decir eso de que "y dado que es una travesía normalmente conocida, omito el relato de lo ocurrido hasta que llegamos a la altura del Cabo Norte, en Finmarke". No lo contaba porque ese camino ya debía de ser de sobra conocido hace 200 años :-) Con las ganas que yo tengo de conocer los fiordos noruegos :-)

Pues me he dicho que, aunque sea de forma virtual, voy a empezar a hacer ese viaje.

Me sobran herramientas TIC para hacerlo. Las de siempre: Mi Catálogo de Faros, MapTech, los derroteros EnRoute, Wikipedia, Flickr, GoolZoom, et tout le tra-la-la :-)

Para ir haciedo boca pongo la posición estimada en la que se encontraba Hudson cuando Juet comienza su relato.
